Case Study: Education & Institutional

Orchard Lake St. Marys

Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory experienced an influx in enrollment and was on a tight timeline to construct a new Prep classroom facility to meet demands. McShane Mechanical rises to the occasion with even the most difficult jobs. In the case of Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory, we were able to approach the job from multiple angles to help the owner come up with a design that prioritized function while adhering to strict budgetary constraints.

Challenge

This building would be 30,000 sq feet, including 20 classrooms, faculty offices and additional study space. When the project came in over budget, we had to use creative thinking and interactive design processes to come up with solutions that cut all unnecessary costs without compromising the integrity of the system to ensure long-term operating reliability.

Solution

We worked with Niagara Murano, the architect, and Peter Basson, the mechanical engineer, to carefully review every detail and specification of the system's design. Our ability to provide alternate design solutions and show how substitutions affected cost in real time allowed us to collaborate on building a lower-cost system without experiencing a loss in quality.

Process

Working as a team with the partners mentioned above, we were able to provide value-engineered solutions that met performance requirements and reduced the cost of the mechanical system bid by approximately 10 percent, delivering a system within the school's budget. The system in place is one that students can rely on to focus on what matters, and school leaders can rely on to minimize operational costs.

Results

Working as a team with the partners mentioned above, we were able to reduce the cost of the mechanical system bid by approximately 10 percent, delivering a system within the school's budget.
